Bishop’s Palace, Wells

Wonderful gardens with roses, herbaceous borders and modern sculptures hidden within the ancient ramparts.

The East Garden is laid out as a parterre with roses, hardy perennials and dahlias.

A knot garden was created under the oriel window in 2019. It is planted with grasses as well as sage, lavender and santolina.

From the East Garden, walk through the doorway to cross the moat to the Wells Garden. Surrounding the springs are herbaceous borders, shrubs, shade loving plants and roses.

Behind the yew hedges and the well pools is the contemporary Garden of Reflection. Planted with silver birch, grasses and perennials, this space is for ‘quietness and contemplation’.

Don’t miss the Community Garden and the Arboretum underplanted with wild flowers.

Stroll along the Rampart Walk in the steps of 14th century clerics.
