In the 16th century, the estate was owned by Richard Mostyn, High Sheriff of Caernarfonshire.

His daughter, Margaret Mostyn married Hugh Wynn and the initials of their son Robert and his wife Katherine appear on the south gable: 1620 – R:W:K

The gardens were developed in the 18th century.

Lady Augusta Mostyn restored and enlarged the house for her second son, Colonel Henry Mostyn. After the Colonel’s death in 1938, and his widow in 1949, their eccentric son Ievan Mostyn inherited the property. Gradually, the property fell into decline.

After some years as a guest house, Historic House Hotels bought the property and started the restoration in 1980. In September 2008, Historic House Hotels Ltd gave all their properties to the National Trust.
