Hartland Abbey
Peaceful gardens near Hartland Quay on the north-west Devon coast.
Walk along the Ladies Walk to the Walled Gardens – but be careful crossing the road. Recently restored, the gardens are divided into different sections and planted with vegetables, fruit, herbaceous plants and perennials. And don’t miss the most wonderful loo in the Potting Shed in the top garden!
Nearer the house are the Baronet’s Bog Garden, the Victorian Fernery and Camellia Garden. Gertrude Jekyll was a frequent visitor and helped Lady Stucley design the garden,
The current owner is Sir Hugh George Copplestone Bampfylde Stucley, a descendent of the original owner.
If you have time, walk down to the sea at Blackpool Mill.
Hartland Abbey is the location for many films including Mallory Towers, Sense and Sensibility, The Shell Seekers and John Le Carre’s The Night Manager.
