Lullingstone Castle and The World Garden
The World Garden is situated within the Walled Garden at Lullingstone Castle.
The garden is designed as a miniature map of the world representing North and South America, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australasia.
It’s a remarkable story of one man’s creation in the depths of despair. Kidnapped in the Colombian jungle on an orchid hunting expedition, Tom Hart Dyke and his companion were told to prepare to die that night. Tom spent the day designing his dream garden containing the plants he had collected from across the world and to pay homage to the plant hunters of the Victorian and Edwardian era.
One acre of the Walled Garden contains the World Garden while the other acre includes the Cactus Houses, the Cloud Garden & Australis temperate house, the Orchid House and the Moroccan Blue Room.
Since its establishment in 2005, the World Garden of Plants has grown year by year, adding rare and significant botanical specimens to its collection including A Dinosaur Tree (Wollemi Pine), one of the oldest trees in the world, and the world’s rarest gum tree, Eucalyptus morrisbyi, collected by Tom in Southeast Tasmania in 1999. It flowered for the first time at Lullingstone in 2009.
The gardens are open from Thursday to Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays.
Historic House Members visit for free during normal opening hours (Thursday – Sunday & Bank Holidays)
