RHS Bridgewater

The Weston Walled Garden has been redesigned as a Paradise Garden by Tom Stuart-Smith. Traditionally a paradise garden has a four fold design but here there are three zones. The east is planted with Mediterranean plants, the west with Asian plants while the central zone has plants from the Americas.

The Kitchen Garden with over 100 beds has been designed by Charlotte Harris and Hugo Bugg. The main paths are inspired by old Ordnance Survey maps and the Bridgewater Canal which runs adjacent to the gardens. Practising no-dig methods, the garden includes habitats for wildlife including mushroom logs and seed heads for overwintering insects while the organic produce is used in the cafe.

The Chinese Streamside Garden covers seven acres and runs from the Ellesmere Lake to Moon Bridge Water. Near the Lake, the Chinese Water Garden with its cascade, pool and rock features, was designed by Mr Fan Xuquan.

RHS Bridgewater is also pioneering a new project which allows doctors in the surrounding areas to prescribe visits to the wellbeing garden for their patients. The programme is run by Ozichi Brewster, RHS Therapeutic Gardener.
